COURSE DESCRIPTION
Diplomacy has evolved from traditional relations between rulers and states into a complex system of international engagement involving governments, international organizations, regional institutions, civil society, communities, experts, and other actors.
Within this evolution, preventive diplomacy has become an important approach to international peace and security: acting early to prevent disputes from emerging, escalating into violence, or spreading.
This course provides a progressive study of preventive diplomacy, beginning with the origins and foundations of diplomacy itself and advancing toward contemporary approaches to conflict prevention.
Participants study the evolution of diplomacy, the foundations of preventive diplomacy, the diplomacy and conflict continuum, Track 1, Track 1.5 and Track 2 diplomacy, early warning, risk assessment, conflict analysis, preventive diplomacy tools, negotiation, mediation, dialogue, prevention planning, and modern challenges affecting preventive diplomacy.
The course concludes by examining how preventive diplomacy is evolving in response to contemporary political, technological, environmental, social, and security challenges.

Every module follows the same structure. WATCH: a short instructional video. READ: a concise supporting lesson. UNDERSTAND: one practical example. CHECK: a four-question knowledge check. CONTINUE: move to the next module. Instructional videos generally remain approximately 5 to 10 minutes each.
FINAL COURSE ASSESSMENT
Part I — Knowledge assessment: 20 questions combining true or false and multiple choice.
Part II — Preventive diplomacy scenario: participants receive a short fictional situation involving increasing political or social tension and answer five questions — What warning signs can you identify? What are the principal risks? Who are the important actors? Which preventive diplomacy tool would you recommend? What action should be taken first, and why?
Recommended passing score: 80%.
COURSE COMPLETION
Upon successful completion, participants should no longer understand preventive diplomacy simply as a definition. They should understand the complete logic of prevention: recognize the situation, understand the risk, identify the actors, select the appropriate diplomatic channel, choose the appropriate tool, act before escalation, and monitor whether the intervention is working.
